Acupuncture has been used for centuries in China for healing purposes. The belief is that by inserting tiny needles into specific points on the body, you can restore balance and promote healing. Acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, and many people are curious to know what the results are like. In this blog post, we will discuss the results of a recent study on acupuncture and its effects on chronic pain.
The father of acupuncture is believed to be the Chinese physician Hua Tuo, who developed many surgical and medical techniques. Acupuncture works on the premise that energy (known as “Qi”) flows through 14 different channels called meridians in the body. Each channel has specific points along it where needles can be inserted to direct this energy and restore balance. How did the Chinese figure this out? They had a deep knowledge of anatomy and believed that illnesses were caused by blockages in these pathways of Qi.
When a person experiences pain, they may receive an acupuncture treatment with needles inserted into these points along the meridian pathways. This helps to unblock any imbalances in Qi, restoring balance and allowing for improved functioning. Acupuncture works to reduce inflammation, relax muscles, promote blood circulation, and stimulate the release of hormones and brain chemicals that help regulate moods.
The results from acupuncture are generally positive and many people report feeling less pain after a few sessions. In addition to relieving pain, acupuncture has also been found to improve other health conditions such as depression, fatigue, headaches, menstrual discomfort, digestive issues, and more. Other forms of acupuncture treatment include moxibustion (the use of burning herbs) and electrostimulation (the use of low-voltage electric current).
There have been some amazing recoveries due to using acupuncture including cases of chronic back pain resolved in just a few treatments or complete recovery from paralysis following a stroke. In my case, I had a painful neuroma in my foot operated on. I then developed what they called an even more painful “nerve stump neuroma” and the surgery would’ve involved cutting into the bottom of my foot and there was a chance I could lose the feeling in my toes that maintain balance. I went to an acupuncturist to help with my allergies and he asked if there were any other issues I was having. I laughingly said, “well, there’s this nerve stump neuroma.” He told me he could move the energy around the neuroma and I’d have no pain with just a few visits. In four visits, the pain was gone and it’s never returned!
It is important to find a good acupuncturist who has experience and knowledge in this field. Some health insurance providers cover acupuncture treatments but you should check with your insurer to see if it is covered under your plan.
Acupuncture is a safe, effective treatment option that can help improve overall health, reduce pain and treat many different conditions. With the right practitioner, you can enjoy the benefits of acupuncture without any pain or discomfort and reap long-lasting results. So why not give it a try? You could be surprised by the positive effects it will have on your life!
